MAKIKI — The Punahou girls volleyball team wasn't going to let anything spoil its senior night.

The second-ranked Buffanblu defeated No. 1 Kamehameha for the first time this season, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I match Tuesday at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

Punahou (5-6) also denied the Warriors' their second straight league title with the win. Kamehameha (9-2), who won the ILH D1 first round title, would have clinched the league's second round title with the win, but now remains tied with Punahou with a 4-1 record with one game left in the second round.

After losing to the Warriors three times this season, Punahou coach Tanya Fuamatu-Anderson said the win was very "rewarding" for her squad.

"We know Kamehameha is always a tough team, the team to beat. I'm just glad that our girls showed up tonight to play and I'm grateful for that. It's very satisfying for our seniors, because this is how you always want to go out (with a win on senior night). For them to go out against the top team currently in the state, I'm so happy for them."

While Punahou put a stop to Kamehameha's title aspirations, it also put a stop to the Warriors' attack for most of the night. The Buffanblu scored 10 points off of the block and forced the Warriors into 26 hitting errors. Kamaile Manol led the effort with seven block assists.

"We made a lot of errors today, but a lot of it was what Punahou was doing," said Kamehameha coach Chris Blake. "They came out fired up and they decided that they were going to make a stand. Their coaching staff did their preparation and their team executed great."

The Buffanblu's offense matched their effort on defense. With setters Teana Adams-Kaonohi and Mehana Maa combining for 42 assists, three different players finished with double-digit kills. Amalia Hillard led the way with 14 while Sinalaulii Uluave and Savana Greene each had 10 apiece. Manol and Aria McComber also chipped in five each and Isabelle Bauer added four more from the middle.

Braelyn Akana and Keonilei Akana led the Warriors in the loss with 15 and 11 kills respectively. Libero Kealani Ontani finished with a match-high 20 digs to lead the Kamehameha defense.
