After struggling to get through perhaps the most difficult pool at the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas on Friday, the Kamehameha Warriors won on Saturday to reach the championship (Gold bracket) semifinal round.

In qualifying round play, Kamehameha swept Mira Costa (Calif.) 25-19, 25-20 this morning at Durango High School gym. That advanced the Warriors to the quarterfinals of the Gold bracket, where they swept Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) 25-22, 25-14.

The Warriors will play Redondo Union (Calif.) in an 11:45 am (Hawaii time) match. In the other semifinal, Assumption (Louisville, Kent.) plays Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.). The championship match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (Hawaii time).

“We are pleased. We had a really tough pool yesterday and were able to pull out the play when we needed it,” Kamehameha coach Chris Blake said. “Today, we have had tough matches and we’re feeling pretty good.”

The Warriors, ranked No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10, went to the maximum three sets on Friday in two of their three pool-play matches.

Also at Durango H.S. gym, ‘Iolani, which went unbeaten in pool play on Friday, lost in its qualifying round to Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) 29-27, 19-25, 25-14. In Silver bracket play, the Raiders lost to St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 25-16, 25-18. ‘Iolani will meet Mira Costa in a 10:30 am (Hawaii time) consolation match.

In a “Classic” (consolation) qualifying-round match at Palo Verde H.S. gym, Kahuku outlasted Durango (Las Vegas) 18-25, 25-17, 25-13. The Lady Raiders advanced to the quarterfinals of their division before losing to La Salle (Pasadena, Calif.) 25-20, 27-25.

Kahuku will meet Notre Dame Belmont (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) in an 11:45 a.m. consolation match.

Updates will be posted here later.
